It’s the perfect way to find out about Orkney’s landscape – to hear and see from travellers in the field, standing next to the varied landforms whose origins they explain. The films are gradually building up, with a new one each year. There is an account of the forces that shape the coast, and an insight into the great glaciers of the Ice Age and the traces of their movement that we can still see today. There is the story of ancient Lake Orcadie, whose sediments became the layered rocks of Orkney today; and the background to a more recent arrival – the Pentland Firth itself.

We travel in the company of the much-missed Orkney geologist, Dr John Flett Brown, and his friend and colleague Dr Adrian Hall from Edinburgh, joined today by Katy Firth from Orkney and Mara Gibb from Caithness.
